History of TATUCA

The formation and objective of the group was to celebrate the occasion of Independence and to commemorate its anniversary annually thereafter. In succeeding years, the organization gained popularity for its involvement in the promotion of cultural activities. In the early phase of its existence, the group was referred to by its supporters as “The UN Boys,” because at the time of its founding – and for a long time thereafter until 1981 – all members were employees of the United Nations in New York.

Also, over time, the definition of TATUCA evolved into The Trinidad and Tobago United Community Association, as members preferred to refer to the organization. In 1968, the group was the first to hire a T&T-based orchestra, Ron Berridge, to play at functions in New York. In 1970 it began recognizing T&T nationals at the annual Independence Ball, a practice which has continued to date. Then in 1986, based on the belief that education is the key to success, the association introduced a Scholarship Award Program with the goal of providing financial assistance to young adults attending college.

As TATUCA turns fifty-nine (59) this August along with Trinidad and Tobago as an independent nation, we the members, look forward to welcoming you, your relatives and friends as we hold this double celebration at Antun’s in Queens Village, New York Saturday, August 20th 2022.

Our Mission

The ten founding fellows consisted of nine Trinidad and Tobago police officers and one who was not in the service. TATUCA has been in the forefront of the Trinidad and Tobago Community in New York for the past fifty-nine (59) years and changed its name to reflect that “community” involvement.

Our Story

Trinidad and Tobago United Cultural Association (TATUCA), a Brooklyn based non-profit organization, was founded in the immediate period prior to attainment of the Independence of Trinidad and Tobago in August 1962.
