The Trinidad and Tobago United Community Association (TATUCA) is a nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn. Founded in August 1962, coinciding with Trinidad and Tobago’s independence, TATUCA was established by 10 United Nations staff members, most of whom were former members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Force.
Purpose and Objectives
The primary objective of TATUCA was to hold an annual function to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s independence. At this event, nationals of Trinidad and Tobago who are dedicated to promoting the culture of Trinidad and Tobago and portraying it in a positive light would be recognized. Additionally, TATUCA aimed to assist college students in realizing their
educational goals by awarding scholarship grants. I should point out that this annual celebration is held under the distinguished patronage of the Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago in New York.
Impact and Contributions
For the past sixty-two (62) years, TATUCA has been at the forefront of the Trinidad and Tobago community in New York. It was the first Trinidad and Tobago organization to hire a home orchestra, led by Ron Burridge, to play at functions in New York. This move was instrumental in promoting the cultural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago within the New York Community.
TATUCA continues to be a pillar of support and celebration for the Trinidad and Tobago
diaspora, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride among its members.
